Poet Gangadhara Meher (1862-1924), well known as ‘Prakriti-Kavi’, Poet of Nature in Oriya Literature, is one among the illustrious makers of Indian Literature. He is so popular poet in Orissa that his birth day is celebrated every year all over the state. He is very famous for his Ramayana-based epic poem ‘Tapasvini’ that treats of Queen Sita’s post-banishment episode in the hermitage of Sage Valmiki.

Under the auspices of State Level Swabhava-Kavi Gangadhara Meher Smruti Samiti, Barpali in collaboration with Balangir Bhulia Meher Samaj, Balangir, Orissa, the 149th Birth Day Celebration of Poet Gangadhara Meher was observed with much pomp and ceremony in Town Hall, Balangir on the sacred day Sravana Purnima, 24 August 2010.

In this Gangadhara Jayanti Function, Prof. Narayan Pruseth, President of the Smruti Samiti presided over the meeting. Prof. Dr. Dhrubaraj Naik, Former Vice-Chancellor of Sambalpur University, Sambalpur adorned the dias as Chief Guest. Dr. Harekrishna Meher, Sr.Reader and Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Government Autonomous College of Bhawanipatna delivered his speech as Chief Speaker on life and socially value-based immortal literary works of Poet Gangadhara.

World Sanskrit Day and Raksha Bandhan are also observed on Sravana Purnima Day. On this occasion, Koshali Meghaduta’ Book (Complete Koshali Lyrical Translation of Poet Kalidasa’s Sanskrit Gitikavya ‘Meghadutam’)
authored by Dr. Harekrishna Meher was inaugurated by the honourable Chief Guest Prof. Dhrubaraj Naik and it was appreciated by the learned audience.
This book is the first Koshali Translation of Meghaduta in Indian literature.

पुरतो लक्ष्यते यत्
सर्वं तत् सत्यं न भवति ।
भवति श्रवण-गोचरं यत्
तत् सर्वं सत्यतां नावति ॥


नेत्राभ्यां यद् दृश्यते
तत् सर्वं न भवति सत्यम्,
यथा मरुभूम्यां तोयपूर्णा मृगतृष्णा,
यथा कूटसाक्षिणो मिथ्यायां सत्यभ्रमः,
यथा पाण्डवानामिन्द्रप्रस्थ-भवने
जले स्थल-भ्रान्तिः
धृतराष्ट्र-तनय-नयने ॥

बाह्य-रूपं यदनुभूयते,
आभ्यन्तर-रूपं तन्न भवति सर्वथा ।
अभिधा-सम्पन्नः शब्दः
भिन्नार्थं प्रकाशयति
व्यञ्जना-व्यापारेण यथा ॥

हृदये भाव-सकलं
जागर्ति यत् किञ्चित्,
सर्वं वै न भवति कथ्यम्,

बाह्य-वचनं चेत्

सर्वत्र कृत्रिम-रमणीयतरम्,
तद् भवितुं शक्यते
आभ्यन्तर-रूपेण हानिकरम् ॥

बाह्य-रूपे कृत्रिम-विश्‍वासः सञ्जातः,
आभ्यन्तरे परन्तु विश्‍वास-घातः ।

विश्रुतो वैश्रवणो रावणः
भिक्षार्थी विदेहजापहरण-प्रवणः ॥

अमधुरं भवतु नाम
बाह्यं मुख-मण्डलम्,
परन्तु हृदयं भवेत्
विश्‍वास-पूतं सुनिर्मलम् ।
हृदयं सदैव निरीक्षणीयम्,

Born on 31 October 1921 at Sinapali in Nuapada district of Orissa.
Died on 17 October 2000.
Father : Poet Manohar Meher (1885-1969, known as ‘Gana-Kavi’ of Western Orissa).
Mother : Srimati Basamati Devi.
Wife : Srimati Sumati Devi.

Sri Narayan Bharasa Meher served as the Headmaster of Sinapali Centre U.P. School for several years and he was also in the post of Sub-Inspector of Schools. He retired from his service in 1979. Since early age, he got immense inspirations from his father Poet Manohar Meher for writing poems and other literary creations. Hailing from a poet’s family, with individual efforts also, he became well-versed in various Sanskrit works and Oriya literature of great writers. He was well-acquainted with Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Koshali and Bengali languages also. His poem-writing in Oriya began in 1942. His first original writing is ‘Bighnaraja Stava’ (A book with prayer and eulogy to Lord Ganesha, the Adorable God of Learning). It has been published by Arunodaya Press, Cuttack in the same year 1942.

Narayan Bharasa Meher was an ideal teacher, poet, lyricist, translator and social reformer. In his literary writings, the words are very simple, lucid, attractive, graceful with poetic attributes. His language and sentiments are co-related with serenity. Some of his Chautisha writings bear the influence of ornate-style found in Riti Yuga of Oriya literature. He has written in several classical poetic metres along with some folk metres of Oriya. Contextual applications of various Alankaras (Figures of speech) such as Upama, Rupaka, Anuprasa, Arthantaranyasa etc. attract the mind of the readers. His poems are imbued with various sentiments of literary aspects.

Bhakti Rasa (Sentiment of Devotion), satirical touch towards social corruptions and pollutions, reflections of Indian Vedanta philosophy, worship of Nature, preservation of forests and natural phenomena with environmental affinity, enhancement of social education and positive reformation, eradication of illiteracy and other social superstitions, establishment of Indian culture, theism, philanthropic attitude, humanitarian concepts and the like are found in his compositions. His poems are based on mythological, epical, spiritual and social topics. Traditional values with modern touch are depicted for a greater prospect of humanity at large. His poetic pen is inclined to realistic perspective and positive thinking for the social development in different aspects of life. His books of poems have been published from Cuttack, Berhampur, Bhawanipatna and Khariar.

His main publications are ‘Bighnaraja Stava’, ‘Satyanarayana Brata Puja’, ‘Palli Patana Karika’, ‘Rabi Narayana Stava’, ‘Bandhya Chikitsa Phala’, ‘Sati Sabitri Brata Purana’, ‘Palli Jagarana Gita’ and ‘Baramasi Parba Parbani’. Several editions of most of these books have spread the popularity of the poet.

His other literary works are : Mahima Sagara, Narayana Padyavali, Narayana Bhajanavali, Mahalakshmi Stava, Dasa Abatara Stava, Mahadeva Stava, Sishu Siksha Gita, Shola Somabara Brata Puja, Somanatha Brata Puja, Dalkhai Marudi Gita, E Yugara Riti Gati, Jagannathanka Besha Gita, Sara Asara Gita, Guru Mahima, Jagannatha Puri Drushya, Nari Charita Lakshana, Saksharata Jagarana, Chanakya Niti Sara etc.

He has published the book Manohar Padyavali”, a Compilation of Poems and Songs of his father Poet Manohar Meher (1885-1969) on the occasion of Kavi Manohar Meher’s Birth Centenary’ in 1985. With his son Dr. Harekrishna Meher, he has compiled Manohar Granthavali”.

He was Founder- President of Manohar Sahitya Samiti, Sinapali. For his literary contributions, he was honoured and felicitated with Manapatra by Khariar Sahitya Samiti. He was recipient of Mayur Publication Award’ (1990). As a senior poet and litterateur, he was honoured with Saraswat Samman’ bearing Tamra Phalaka Prasati, memento and shawl by Orissa Sahitya Akademi, Bhubaneswar on 29 June 1994.

About his life and literary works, Dr. Ashok Kumar Hota’s article Kavi Narayana Bharasa Meher : Eka Parichiti” has been published in the Literary magazine “Pracheta”, April-September 1993 Issue (Pages 18- 33).

Narayan Bharasa Meher was an Advisor of ‘Pracheta Sahitya O Sanskruti Parishad’ of Uttarakula Hata, Pritipur, Jajpur, Orissa.

His Biography has been published in “Who’s Who of Indian Writers” (Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi), “Reference India”, “Indo-American Who’s Who” and some other biographical volumes.
