Oriya Kavya 'Tapasvini' Canto-4 of Poet Gangadhar Meher/ Dr.Harekrishna Meher

Extracts From Original Oriya Kavya ‘Tapasvini’
Of Poet Gangadhara Meher
*
Canto-IV Mangale Aila Usha’ (मङ्गळे अइला उषा)
Original Oriya written in Chokhi Raaga.
*
Here the readers may enjoy the beautiful expression and musical charm of Oriya literary metre ‘Chokhi’, excellence of alliterations along with emotional intimate relationship between Nature and mankind. Aspects of Nature such as Usha (Dawn), Zephyr, Black Bee, Fragrance, Cuckoo, Kumbhatua and Kalinga Birds, River Tamasa, Vana-Lakshmi (Sylvan Beauty) – all are personified here with sympathetic affinity. Hence an ecological phenomenon also finds a place of interest.

As the context goes on, in the hermitage of Sage Valmiki, Nature greets the exiled Sita as an esteemed Queen and offers all the royal formalities of worship. Dawn, the blooming lotus-eyed lady, cherishing hearty desire to behold Sita and bringing gifts of dew-pearls in her leafage-hands, stands in the outer courtyard of ashram and in cuckoo’s voice speaks to grace her with Sita’s benign sight. The retinues of Usha do their duties to wake up Sita. Usha appears as a Goddess of Yoga having Sun-brown costume, blooming smile of flowers and calm figure. Sita extends her reverence and devotion to the auspicious Usha.

Further accompanied by the matron Anukampa and the hermit-girls, Sita goes to River Tamasa to have an early bath. Tamasa welcomes Sita, with own wave-hands places her on the watery lap and embraces affectionately. Tamasa regards Sita as her daughter and shows filial affections. Sita, the devoted and banished wife of King Rama finds Tamasa as the Embodiment of Mother and sole peaceful resort of her later life. Here dialogues between Tamasa and Sita are really very heart-touching and impressive. In Oriya literature, significant is the epithet ‘Prakriti-Kavi’, Poet of Nature, for Gangadhara Meher.

To me it is an unique attempt ever made by any oriya. But the script in Devnagari can be replaced by oriya script of i-leap. It can be typed through phonetic transliteration. If any help is needed, I can extend my help.
