Purushottama-Gītikā
(Song for Lord Jagannātha)
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
My salutations to Lord Jagannātha,
the Supreme Self throbbing in all the bodies.
He is adored all over the world
and is delighted in the heart-like
temples of all the beings. (0)

Salutations to the Prime Self of all selves.
He is figured with divine deeds.
Indestructible and all-encompassing is He.
The body of wooden frame He has borne.
He is the form of OM, the sacred chant.
He is Swan-like Brahman, self-shining,
rightly enumerated in the scriptures. (1)
*
O Mind ! Bow down to the Supreme God
Purushottama Jagannātha
along with Balabhadra (elder brother)
and Subhadrā (younger sister),
the trio characterized with three guņas
(sattva, rajas and tamas), and
the three Gems of Jainas and Bauddhas.
He is the supreme abode of Bhūh (world),
Bhuvah (firmament) and Svah (heaven).
He forms the friend of the wretched.
He is the ocean of mercy and is prayed
with the offerings of flowers of devotion. (2)
*
O Mind ! Deliberate on the Lord,
whose holy abode is situated near the shore
of the southern ocean,
the Lord, who bears the banner of
sanctifying the down-trodden,
and who resides in the temple-cave
of Nila-giri, the black mountain.
He is Truth, Good and Eternal Beauty.
He is attractive in Śańkha-Nābhi-Kshetra
(the region of the navel of conch) Puri.
He is congratulated by the noble ones. (3)
*
My salutations to the Lord
who is ever exerted to alleviate
sufferings of those consigned to Him.
He is limitless. He is Nārāyaņa, who has heartily
accepted the sweet smiles of Lakshmī,
the Mother-goddess of the world.
He is omnipresent, the prime root of the beings.
He is the auspicious bestower of emancipation,
and is exhilarated by gods and the wise. (4)

I pray to Lord Jagannātha, who is ŚrīRāma,
the consort of Queen Sītā, blissfully
eulogized by the great devotee Tulasīdāsa.
He is the flute-player Krishna
praised by the great saint Chaitanya.
He is Bhairava, the deity of tantric process.
He is the elephant-headed god Ganeśa.
Garuđa, the bird-king, is His conveyance.
He is wielder of the discus Sudarśana
and the husband of Goddess Lakshmī.
He is the form of all the divinity and
is known as the unblemished form of Buddha,
the Enlightened One. (5)
*
O Lord of the worlds ! On the sacred
occasion of Ratha-Yātrā (Chariot Festival),
while you come out from the temple,
O Govinda ! the eyes of people are fortunate
to relish the bliss of your auspicious vision.
O Lord ! you are mounted on the chariot
Nandighosha and are accompanied with
the joyous sound of conches and bells. (6)
*
O Hari, the destroyer of all evils !
All virtues mingle in Thee.
All activities perish in Thee.
Thy feet that eradicate all sins
are my sole shelter and saviour.
May the nectar of thy names
bestowing well-being for ever
flow from the strings of my inner heart.
Salutations to Lord Jagannātha
heartily worshipped by all. (7) *
