‘Ritusamhara’
Kavya of Poet Kalidasa
Complete Oriya
Version by : Dr. Harekrishna Meher

Poet Kalidasa is a world-famous distinguished figure in Classical
Sanskrit Literature
and he is well-known as ‘Prakriti-Kavi’,
Poet of Nature, owing to his extraordinary
calibre in depicting various phenomena of Nature with hearty
emotional touch of
human relations.
His
Sanskrit works mainly comprise mahakavyas,
khanda-kavyas and dramas.
His two mahakavyas are ‘Raghuvamsam’ and ‘Kumara-Sambhavam’, while
his three
dramas
are ‘Abhijnana-Sakuntalam’, ‘Malavikagnimitram’
and ‘Vikramorvashiyam’.
He has
composed two khandakavyas ‘Meghadutam’ and ‘Ritusamharam’.
His ‘Ritusamhara’ kavya consists of six
cantos (sarga) bearing descriptions
of six
seasons that
are ‘Grishma (Summer), Varsha (Rain), Sharat (Autumn), Hemanta
(Winter),
Shishira (Dew) and Vasanta (Spring). It is a small kavya especially
endowed with
some amorous descriptions of human beings in different seasons.
It also
depicts various aspects of beauty and other figures of Nature corresponding
to the
feelings of men and women in the worldly activities.
Complete
Oriya Metrical Translation of ‘Ritusamhara’ kavya was done by me in June
1973. The special feature of this translation is that the last word of
each verse ends with
the letter ‘Ra’. So
this kavya is written in ‘Ra’-Antyanuprasa (‘र’ वर्ण-अन्त्यानुप्रास).
Even
after so long years, due to lack of proper opportunity, till now it has not
seen
the
light of the day in the book-form. However, some extracts have been published
on the
internet in some sites. In the present context, some selected passages are
given
below for the relish of the readers.
(For convenience of the general readers,
Oriya letters are here shown in Devanagari
scripts.)
